Finland is set to establish a hydrogen market with the help of its national hydrogen transmission network. Gasgrid, the company responsible for the gas transmission network in the country, has released a preliminary plan for Finland’s hydrogen backbone network. The aim is to create an open hydrogen market by the early 2030s.
The plans are based on a market survey conducted by Gasgrid in 2023 and will initially focus on the coastal area of Finland where a significant number of wind power projects are located and a large portion of the country’s carbon dioxide emissions are generated in southern Finland. This first phase of development will lay the foundation for future expansion into eastern, central, and northern Finland where new renewable energy production sites could be established.
Gasgrid will begin mapping out concrete route alternatives for the hydrogen transmission network in the coming months, gathering feedback from companies and project developers involved in the hydrogen economy. This collaborative approach will help support the further development and expansion of the network in various regions of Finland.
