A Tribute to Former Bears Quarterback Bob Avellini: Remembering a Fierce Competitor and an Unlikely Playoff Hero

Bob Avellini, former Bears quarterback, passes away at 70

Former Bears quarterback Bob Avellini passed away at the age of 70 on Saturday. Avellini was drafted by the Bears in the sixth round of the 1975 draft, the same year Walter Payton was selected as the team’s first-round pick. During his rookie season, Avellini started four games and went on to start 40 more regular season games over the next three seasons. He made his only playoff appearance in a loss to the Cowboys after the 1977 season. The Bears described Avellini as a fierce and tough competitor, best known for leading the team on an unlikely run to their first postseason appearance in 14 years in 1977.

Avellini remained with the Bears until he was released during the 1984 season. He finished out the year with the Jets and also spent time with the Cowboys during the 1986 preseason before ultimately retiring. The Bears expressed their condolences for the loss of Avellini, recognizing his contributions to the team and his impact on their history. He will be missed by all who knew him.
