Japanese Skater Sakamoto Kaori Makes History with Third Consecutive World Figure Skating Championship Win
Sakamoto Kaori had a remarkable 2023-24 season, capping off her exceptional year with a win at the World Figure Skating Championships for the third consecutive year. This made history as the first woman since Peggy Fleming in 1968 to achieve this feat.
Sakamoto also clinched her third successive title at the Japanese nationals and achieved her first Grand Prix Final in Beijing in December. She is now tied with Asada Mao for the most victories by a Japanese female skater.
Looking back on her achievements, Sakamoto expressed her happiness at accomplishing her goals for the season. She emphasized the importance of the upcoming 2024-25 season, which will be crucial as it precedes the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026. Sakamoto aims to use this next season to build momentum for the Olympics and is focused on continued hard work and improvement to prepare for the challenge ahead.
